Bedford, NH — Normandeau Associates was represented at the "Reconciling Spatial Scales and Stock Structures for Fisheries Science and Management" workshop held at Portsmouth, NH on June 27-28, 2011. Senior Scientist Christopher Gurshin presented a poster on Normandeau's collaborative research with the University of New Hampshire (UNH) to estimate biomass and describe the distribution of spring-spawning Atlantic cod within the Gulf of Maine cod spawning protection area in Ipswich Bay, western Gulf of Maine. This ongoing research, funded by the Northeast Consortium, brings Normandeau's expertise in fisheries acoustics, UNH's marine fisheries research experience and the commercial fishing industry together to study this iconic New England fish species through acoustic and trawl surveys.

This well-attended public workshop brought over 150 fisheries stakeholders among state and federal government, academia, industry, and non-profit organizations together to explore how fisheries management can better use data on stock structure and ecological processes in achieving sustainable fishery resources. The workshop details, including the forthcoming abstracts and summary report, can be found at http://extension.unh.edu/GISGPS/SpatialScalesWorkshop_001.htm
