Varney Keynotes Compliance and Enforcement Summit

Bedford, NH — Bob Varney, Normandeau's Executive Vice President, recently spoke at an environmental conference in Washington, DC titled The Next Generation of Environmental Compliance and Enforcement. The summit, hosted by the Horinko Group, a Washington, DC based consulting firm, included a number of highly experienced environmental professionals with public and private sector perspectives. Mr. Varney, former EPA New England Regional Administrator and one of the nation's longest serving state environmental commissioners, and Jon Cannon, Director of the Environmental and Land Use Law Program at the University of Virginia Law School and former General Counsel at the USEPA, were the Keynote speakers. They offered their views about what is working, what is not, and how enforcement and compliance programs will change in the future.

Other speakers at the summit included John Cruden, President of the Environmental Law Institute; David Trimble, Director of Natural Resources and Environment, US GAO; Elizabeth Pitrolo of the Army Corps of Engineers; Larry Starfield, Deputy Assistant Administrator, EPA Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance (OECA); Steve Hellen, Executive Director, Corporate Environmental Enforcement Council; Brent Fewell, Senior VP of Environmental Health & Safety for United Water; Peter Wright, Managing Counsel, Dow Chemical Company; Sheila Deely, Senior Counsel, Environmental, Freeport McMoRan Copper and Gold; Khary Cauthen, Director of Federal Relations, American Petroleum Institute; and Marianne Horinko, President of the Horinko Group and former Acting Administrator of US EPA and Assistant Administrator of OSWER, US EPA.
