Normandeau to Lead Planning Committee for AWRA Conference on Environmental Flows | Bedford, NH — Monday, January 14, 2013 — Normandeau Associates is leading the planning committee to facilitate development of the technical program for the American Water Resources Association's (AWRA) 2-day international Summer Specialty Conference on Environmental Flows. The conference will be held in Hartford, Connecticut, on June 24-25, 2013.
Jane Rowan, a senior principal scientist at Normandeau, is chairing the conference planning committee, and the technical subcommittee will be led by Normandeau's Tom Payne, a senior associate, and Tim Brush, a senior fisheries scientist. Members of the planning committee include scientists and policymakers from CardnoEntrix, Miller Ecological Consultants, and the State of Connecticut.
Conference presentation and discussion topics will include:
- Obtaining and analyzing instream flow data
- A look at the past and most current instream habitat modeling methodologies
- The evolution of regulatory policies as they relate to flow and power generation, irrigation, municipal and industrial water supply, and endangered/sensitive species management and recovery
- Feasibility of implementing variable environmental flows within the watershed
- How current technologies and tools can inform policy decisions relative to maintenance and improvement of aquatic habitat
In addition, conference attendees will have ample opportunities for networking with scientists who have similar backgrounds in both the private and government sectors.
Attendees can also get hands-on experience (and CEUs) at Normandeau's workshop on environmental flow modeling and field trip to one of the oldest water supply watersheds in the country-participants will experience collection of macroinvertebrates and fish in two locations that comparatively show the effects of water flow management on the aquatic community.
The workshop and field trip are also open to attendees of a second AWRA Summer Specialty Conference, Healthy Forests = Healthy Water , that will be held in the same location at the end of the week (June 26-28). This second conference will be organized by 2013 AWRA President Carol Collier and other renowned scientists in the watershed management field and associated with the Pinchot Institute. |
