Hudson River Update

Bedford, NH — While many coastal areas are still trying to recover from the devastating effects of Hurricane Sandy, Normandeau Associates is fortunate to have its Hudson River operations back to normal. Located about 40 miles north of New York City, our facility includes an office, a workshop and several vessels at a local marina. Normandeau staff have been conducting environmental monitoring and fisheries studies along the Hudson River from Albany, NY to New York City for more than 40 years. Due to the combination of a tidal surge, high winds and heavy rain, the surrounding area lost power, trees were knocked down, boat docks, buildings and infrastructure were damaged, storm-related debris was strewn everywhere and many areas were flooded. In addition, the roads leading to our facility were closed, further hampering restoration and clean-up efforts.

Normandeau is fortunate that all of its larger boats escaped damage by the storm, largely due to the decision of our staff to pull them from the water and place them in a location where they were protected from the tidal surge. One smaller boat, trailer and all, was lifted by the rising waters and deposited in wetlands across the street. It needed only minor repairs. Our offices and workshop area, flooded with water and debris, have been cleaned up while carpets and other items have been replaced.

Many thanks go to our dedicated and resourceful New York staff who wisely prepared for the storm and quickly responded to its impacts. As a result, Normandeau's Hudson River monitoring efforts resumed within five days, a significant accomplishment considering the damage to the marina and the surrounding area. This disruption, of course, seems minor compared to the impacts of the storm in areas such as Staten Island, New York City and New Jersey.
