Bedford, NH — The Energy Policy Act of 2005 authorized the Department of the Interior to oversee development of alternative energy projects on the US Outer Continental Shelf (OCS). With the MMS' expanded authority has come the need for further investigations related to biological resources on the OCS. In order to properly evaluate offshore alternative energy projects as they are proposed, the MMS has engaged an expert team led by Normandeau Associates to compile and evaluate existing information on the effects of electromagnetic fields (EMF) from undersea cables on elasmobranches (e.g. sharks, rays) and other marine species. Offshore alternative energy development poses potential environmental impacts that are not fully understood; Normandeau's highly qualified scientific team will gather and interpret scientific data that will support detailed environmental analyses and impact assessment during the leasing and development phases of offshore renewable energy projects.
