NOAA's NEFSC Seminar Features Normandeau Eel Research
|Portsmouth, NH — Woods Hole, MA- The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts hosts a public webinar series featuring current issues in fisheries science. Normandeau's Dr. Christopher W.D. Gurshin, Principal Fisheries Scientist was invited to present research on the Assessment of Three Sonars to Evaluate the Downstream Migration of American Eel in the St. Lawrence River which focused on research that Normandeau and teaming partners, Don Degan and Dr. Anna-Maria Mueller of Aquacoustics, Inc., conducted while under contract with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) for the collaboratively funded Eel Passage Research Center (EPRC).
The Normandeau team evaluated the feasibility of three types of sonar technology to estimate eel abundance, determine distribution, and describe behavior of out-migrating eels as they approach hydropower projects. Information presented by Dr. Gurshin's is available on the Cooperative Institute for the North Atlantic Region's website http://www.cinar.org/seminars
Scientists at Normandeau Associates use hydroacoustic technologies to study a diverse range of aquatic environmental issues, such as fish passage at hydroelectric facilities, fish impingement and entrainment at power plant intakes, resource assessment surveys, hydrokinetic site evaluations, and habitat or resource impact assessments.
To discuss this study or the various applications of hydroacoustic technologies, contact Dr. Gurshin by email email@example.com
