Congressional Clean Water Briefing

Bedford, NH — As part of an ongoing effort to help build support for clean water in New England, Normandeau's Harry Stewart and other water quality professionals attended NEWEA's annual Congressional Briefing in Washington, DC. The event provides an important opportunity for NEWEA members and elected officials to discuss critical issues related to water, wastewater and stormwater management and the need for infrastructure investment.

Speakers included U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island; U.S. Representatives Jim McGovern of Massachusetts, Elizabeth Esty of Connecticut and Peter Welch of Vermont; Mayor Daniel Rivera of Lawrence, Massachusetts; City Manager James Chaousis of Rockland, Maine and Deputy City Manager Dave Allen of Portsmouth, NH; EPA New England's Director of Ecosystem Protection Ken Moraff; and NEWEA President Ray Willis and Government Affairs Committee Chair Peter Grose. In addition, meetings were held with individual members of Congress and their staff to discuss accomplishments, challenges, roles and responsibilities to ensure that our nation's water quality is protected and restored.

Prior to joining Normandeau in May 2015, Mr. Stewart was Water Division Director at the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES) for 16 years and previously held several other management positons at NHDES. He also worked for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (Region 4 in Atlanta) and as an environmental consultant. Mr. Stewart has engineering degrees from Tufts University (BS) and Georgia Institute of Technology (MS) and a Master of Business Administration from Northeastern University and is a registered professional engineer. He also has served as Chairman of the New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission and was President of the Association of Clean Water Administrators, the national association of state agency water directors which, in 2013, presented him with its highest award, the Environmental Statesman Award.
