Varney Awarded EPA's Ira Leighton Award
|Bedford, NH — Each year at an awards ceremony at Faneuil Hall in Boston, MA, the US EPA New England regional office recognizes individuals and groups in New England who have worked to protect and improve the regions environment in distinct ways. One of the most prestigious and unique awards is named after the late Ira Leighton, former Deputy Regional Administrator of EPA New England. The Ira Leighton "In Service to States" Environmental Award recognizes an individual or organization that has made significant strides in facilitating state and federal partnership through innovative, sustainable solutions addressing critical environmental challenges while actively demonstrating conviction and leadership in protecting the environment and promoting sustainable practices. The award is based on a nomination jointly submitted by three interstate organizations: the NE Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission (NEIWPCC); the Northeast States for Coordinated Air Use Management (NESCAUM); and the Northeast Waste Management Officials Association (NEWMOA), in coordination and consultation with the NE State environmental commissioners.
The 2016 Ira Leighton "In Service to States" award was presented to Bob Varney, President of Normandeau Associates, Inc. by EPA Regional Administrator Curt Spaulding, Deputy Regional Administrator Deborah Szaro, and New Hampshire DES Commissioner Thomas Burack, who cited many of Bob's accomplishments and leadership with issues such as climate change, energy efficiency, integration of energy and environmental programs, clear air, clean water, safe drinking water, and environmental justice.
