Client: Electric Power Research Institute
Project Highlights: Normandeau provided technology for a collaborative study to validate the effectiveness of TIMR℠.
Services Provided: Turbine Integrated Mortality Reduction (TIMR℠)
Normandeau was the technology vendor for a collaborative study to validate the effectiveness of the Turbine Integrated Mortality Reduction (TIMR℠) at the Orient Wind Facility in Adair County, Iowa (DEEE0008727). The TIMR℠ system was shown to be highly effective in an initial study at the Blue Sky Green Field Facility in Wisconsin and this study was designed to verify the performance at a second site.
The purpose of this research was to evaluate an “informed” real-time approach to smart curtailment using Normandeau’s TIMR℠ system. EPRI and team evaluated the effectiveness of the TIMR℠ system by directly comparing its performance, both from the perspective of bat mortality reduction and from an economic perspective, to control (i.e., normal operating wind turbines) and blanket curtailment (e.g., feathered up to 5.0 m/s) treatments. Testing occurred over two calendar years, and the results are currently in preparation.
